GRACE EPISCOPAL DAY SCHOOL SELECTED BY
THE BALTIMORE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA FOR PRESTIGIOUS RESIDENCY PROGRAM
FOURTH GRADERS TO PERFORM
WITH THE WOODWIND SECTION
KENSINGTON, MD – February 4, 2009—Grace Episcopal Day School, one of the region’s leading independent elementary schools, has been selected by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra to participate in its exclusive “BSO on the GO” special residency program.
Each year, the BSO selects just three fourth grade classes in the region to participate in its residency program. As part of this program, the fourth graders at Grace Episcopal Day School will work with the woodwind section of the BSO over two visits to learn “Theme and Variations: Irish Fantasy”. During the first visit on February 20, the students will be introduced to the theme of the composition, written especially for this program, for oboe trio and recorders. During the second visit on May 29, the BSO will perform the composition with the Grace fourth graders before a live audience. Between these visits the students will learn to perform the theme and many variations.
The BSO recognizes the important role arts education plays in the life of children, improving academic achievement and greatly enhancing social and emotional development. The mission of this program dovetails perfectly with the mission and philosophy of the Grace curriculum. Performing with professional artists of this caliber is a wonderful opportunity and an honor for the Grace students.
