GRACE EPISCOPAL DAY SCHOOL SELECTED BY THE BALTIMORE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA FOR PRESTIGIOUS RESIDENCY PROGRAM
FOURTH GRADERS TO PERFORM WITH THE TRIO LA MILPA

KENSINGTON, MD – May 19 — Grace Episcopal Day School, one of the region’s leading independent elementary schools, has been selected by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra to participate in its exclusive “BSO on the GO” special residency program.
Each year, the BSO selects just three fourth grade classes in the region to participate in its residency program. This year, the fourth graders at Grace Episcopal Day School will perform “An Irish Fantasy” by Jonathan Jensen with Trio La Milpa, an oboe trio from the BSO. The concert will be held at Grace Episcopal Day School’s multipurpose room on Friday, May 29, 2009 at 11:15 am.
The fourth graders first met the members of Trio La Milpa in February 2009, when they were introduced to the theme of the composition, written especially for this program. Since then, the students have been learning and practicing the piece on their recorders.
“They are so good at playing the oboe and it was really cool when they played really fast,” said one of the fourth graders after the February visit. “I can’t wait for them to come back and play with us.”
The BSO recognizes the important role arts education plays in the life of children, improving academic achievement and greatly enhancing social and emotional development. The mission of this program dovetails perfectly with the mission and philosophy of the Grace curriculum. Performing with professional artists of this caliber is a wonderful opportunity and an honor for the Grace students.
